From photos to NCS notations with Extract

A lot of colour work starts with an image, like an inspiration photo or a product you want to match. The Extract tool in NCS+ Pro translates them into notations. Select up to three points in any image and get the closest NCS notation for each, ready to save to your boards and build on. Available on mobile and desktop.

From image to notation

With Extract, you can select up to three colours in an image, such as a wall or a small detail, and NCS+ matches each one to its closest NCS notation. It works on both mobile and desktop, so you can capture a colour on site with your phone and pick up where you left off at your desk.

Once you’ve found your colours, you can save them to your boards and see which other NCS colours work well with them. NCS+ also shows products in matching or complementary colours, from furniture to rugs and lighting, so a single image can grow into a complete moodboard.

Seen in practice

We tried Extract on an image from INR’s “Outside the white box” collection, a bathroom range that challenges white as the default choice. In a few taps, the photo gave us a blue from the cabinet, a warm red from the towel rail and a terracotta from the floor.

INR manufactures its entire collection in NCS notations. Read the full story behind the colours.

Why it matters

By translating what you see into an NCS notation, Extract gives you a precise starting point you can compare with physical samples and carry it through to the final specification.

Extracted colours are based on the image, so light, exposure and filters can affect the result. Always make an assessment with physical colour samples or a Colourpin.

Get started

The Extract tool is available for all NCS+ Pro and Pro Team members. Open NCS+, select Extract and try it on your next source of inspiration.
