NCS Colourful History

NCS (Natural Colour System) is celebrating its 80th anniversary, marking eight decades of innovation in colour communication.
Over the years NCS has become a fundamental tool in colour communication. Developed in Sweden, the system was created to meet the need for a reliable and practical way to define and reproduce colours. Today, NCS is used globally in design, architecture and industry, setting the standard for colour communication with its accuracy and ease of use. From its early beginnings, NCS has grown into a central part of the modern colour world.
Why there was a need of the NCS System?
The founding of the company
NCS Colour was founded in 1945 and was initially named T. Palmer AB, which would later become known as the Scandinavian Colour Institute. Today, it is NCS, and next year we will celebrate 80 years as a company of colour innovation and expertise!

The launch of the NCS System & NCS Atlas
Following numerous psychometric experiments based on modern psychology and physics, the Natural Colour System (NCS) was launched in 1979 as Sweden's national colour standard (SIS). The system was illustrated in the NCS Atlas, featuring a standard selection of 1 412 colours.
Målaremästarnas Association financed the publication of the Atlas, which was released by the newly established Scandinavian Colour Institute. Alongside this, the Swedish Standards Commission (SIS) provided a detailed description of the NCS system, including guidelines for viewing, measurement conditions, and tolerances for the colour samples.
While the Atlas provided a logical presentation of the system, it is the colour notation, not the colours themselves, that is standardised. The Atlas functions like a ruler, where colours between the selected samples can also be named using the NCS system. The code on the back of each sample indicates its appearance under standardised viewing conditions, and the perceived colour may vary in different contexts. The colour selections in the Atlas were produced in various sizes for design, documentation, and research purposes, with collections for specific uses.
The NCS System today
Since the NCS System launch in 1979 with the iconic NCS Atlas, NCS quickly became the preferred colour reference for architects, designers and for the industry globally. On the journey to the present day several other products have evolved, such as the top seller NCS Index 2050, alongside other innovative solutions like the cloud-based colour management platform CAPQ and the digital platform NCS+. Constantly evolving the NCS offer while research into colour perception and colour communication keeps evolving.
The NCS system has gradually expanded its colours over the years. In 1984 an additional 118 colours were added to the system. Subsequently, the system has launched three expanded standard colour collections.
NCS Colour continues to evolve and has introduced key innovations over the years. In 2009, the NCS Navigator, a web application, was launched. It wasn't until 2010 that the Scandinavian Colour Institute was renamed into NCS Colour. By 2015, the NCS Colourpin was introduced, a wireless colour reader connected to a smartphone app and cloud system, enabling instant colour matching of scanned surfaces. The app also lets users transform inspiration into colour on their phones.
With over 35 years of experience in developing leading colour systems, the CAPQ brand was launched in 2014, offering advanced Colour Management solutions for the manufacturing industry. To ensure consistent colour reproduction across different materials and manufacturers, NCS Colour follows national and international standards such as SIS, ISO, CEN, and CIE. NCS is a standardised system with precise colour samples, helping industries achieve accurate colours for critical applications like emergency signage, healthcare markings, and the Swedish flag.
Colours must be producible on different materials and products from various manufacturers, and the function of the exact colour is important.
Today NCS is one of the world’s leading colour systems and is used for colour communication across all types of industries. NCS is the national standard in Sweden, Norway, Spain, and South Africa, and NCS Colour has a presence in over 80 countries.
Milestones

"The only true correct definition of colour: Colour is what we see as colour. Colours are created in the psyche, in the very moment we perceive them, and as long as we look at them. It is important in colour science to distinguish between physical colour (physics) and perceptual colour (psychology), what we see as colour."
— Lars Sivik, 1965, co-founder of NCS: Natural Colour System®
