In the 1960s, three scientists acknowledged the challenge to communicate colours. They began researching how to create a universal colour language to describe colours in a uniform way so that everyone could understand.

Almost 20 years later, in 1979, the Natural Colour System was launched. With hundreds of thousands of visual colour assessments in the research, NCS is still today unique being the only colour system that is 100% based on how we visually perceive colour.

When NCS was first launched, the scientist choose 1412 colour to present the NCS System. Today, NCS have 2050 colours representing the NCS System in our Standard collection, however, do not forget that the NCS System enables you to name all 10 million colour that we can perceive.
